Rusty’s strings still vibrated. Even though he’d been locked in the blackness of a guitar case for hours, he relived this newfound freedom with glee and guilt.

For a short while, the Country Music Awards after-party was the battered guitar’s crowning moment. The actual party was painfully dull at first: executives and millionaires swallowing oysters Rockefeller and sipping bubbly wine. But after a few snooty hours, one singer opened a case of bourbon in the storage room and a who’s-who of country legends held a secret sing-along to escape high-falootin’ boredom.

That tight room was stacked to the ceiling with Costco containers of olive oil, paprika, wild rice and everything else fancy restaurants keep on hand.

By some miracle, Rusty ended up being the only musical instrument present. The guitar was passed from star-to-star.
